Paul Merton unofficial
"And This Is Me" I went to see the new show (His first live show for eleven years) at Middlesbrough Town Hall on the 21st November 1998. The show begins with a table, chair and bottle of water on stage. This trio is then joined by Paul Merton and the show begins. The show is simply two hours of Paul talking to the audience (with a single, short sketch), it is also two hours of the funniest comedy I've seen. Paul starts with jokes and one liners, most of which will be familiar to those who have seen his shows on TV. However once he settles down and begins to talk about his life the show really hits it's stride. Reminiscences of his life are mixed with the kind of surreal tales for which he has become famous. The topics go from his school days right up to recording "Have I Got News For You" only two night's before. It is quite strange to find yourself laughing at a man telling you about what must have been a harrowing experience in a mental hospital, but in fact this is the funniest part of the show. A caption competition is included for the audience and a whole bottle of beer can be won ! All in all a wonderful nights entertainment.
